Oh yes, you've really hit the nail on the head. Sometimes I feel like you and I are always on the same wavelength. My oldest daughter is about to graduate from high school and her longtime best friend (who seems perfect in every way, as do her parents), just found out she got into Harvard next year to do pre-med. My daughter, who has always gotten excellent grades, has decided she wants to go to hairdressing school. She has always loved cutting hair (she was probably the only 6 year old who cut bangs for her sister and everyone loved it!) and making people feel good about themselves. In fact, I thought of you recently when she made a prom dress for a friend who couldn't afford one. Anyhow, my husband and I and many of our extended family have been thinking, "what a waste for this brilliant girl not to go to college." But you know what, she's happy and excited about the future and I know she'll be successful in anything she sets out to do. My dear friend always says, "What other people think of you is none of your business," and I think about that almost every morning as I drive my kids to school in a clunky old Toyota and wait in the car line surrounded by Lexus minivans (when did this become a thing?) and BMWs. My kids are too little to notice that the other kids/parents have nicer clothes, nicer cars, nicer houses, etc. But I never complain out loud to my kids because I am hoping that they won't notice for a long, long time, and when they do they won't care.ReplyCancel

Hello Miggy, I'm a longtime reader and I just wanted to share a weird coincidence with you. My husband has the same very unusual first name as your husband. He started an Instagram account recently to make sure our 13 year old is posting appropriate things and he tried to use the same name (—-dawg) and wasn't able to use it. So he looked at your husband's profile and showed it to me, I was like, "That's Lamp!" He had no idea what I was talking about, but anyhow, it made me smile. Tess–Ha! Not only the same name, but he wanted the same instagram handle as well. Funny! Get this… So my husband was named after a dentist that my husbands dad went to dental school with. Years later at BYU he moves into a new complex and someone tells him, "Hey, a guy with your same name just moved out. He was named after some dentist in Idaho." They were named after the same guy! That is wild! My husband was named B—– because it was his mom's maiden name and she was so determined to put it on his birth certificate as a middle name (with John as a first name) that she wrote it down first on the form and in the wrong place! So he became B—- John and everyone has always called him B—-. I can't believe there are so many of them walking around. My husband is an accountant, but he spends a lot of time at the dentist! I am an extremely insecure person who struggles with believing I am created just how God wanted me to be. There is a person in my life who is "golden". Everything they touch/do/say almost always turn out the way they desire. They have a magnetic personality and can manipulate many situations with their words. I do not have a way with words or a winsome personality and sometimes feel quite envious and wish I'd have been blessed with just a tad of "golden". I have not arrived at the place yet where I can feel truly grateful for how I was created. But, I am working on it. Sometimes there are moments when I don't mind who I am and I believe God will help me to reach that place.

Anon–Ugh. The Golden person. I think a lot of us can relate to that golden person. It can be hard not being a little jealous. You may not have the winsome personality or have everything turn out just the way you want, but I know you have something–some talent, some trait–that you are good at. That is you. Develop it, nurture it and whatever you do…resist the temptation to become bitter. I'm a big believer that life just isn't fair. It's really not. Beautifully written, I do the exact same thing when I am jealous. As an architecture student, it's easy to be competitive with peers about out projects and whose is 'best' or whose is 'coolest' (which are ridiculous, subjective ideas that don't really mean anything). And I hate the person I become when I am jealous, so I tried to figure out some positive way to combat that jealous monster. I wrote a post about it on my blog and came to the same conclusion you did, that "the time and energy spent envying others… can be so much better spent encouraging others. Because I really think that if we stopped being jealous all the time, we would learn so much from each other and then the possibilities to create/make/write/do something amazing would be endless." Emotions wise The minute I went from NYC fashion designer to stay at home mom of four with tired face and ponytail hair. I decided motherhood was the great equalizer. Something I realized as moms we dont do that women do in business in network….similar ideas are means to collaborate not shun or be jealous of. Man I had so many fall start ideas and projects when my kids were younger I needed help!! But instead i had so many woman say to me aren't you doing enough? seems like alot of effort for not much payback.It deflated me all the time 🙁
When one gets past of the fog stage of motherhood (after kindergarten) connect, network collaborate, and support someone who are still in the fog. I know other women are better than me and can do this in the fog or they don't even experience the fog…but for me there was fog.

Oh Miggy! THis post reminds me of the book I'm reading (have about 30 pages to go) called You Should Have Known by Jean Hanff Korelitz. It's about a woman with the perfect life who realizes that her carefully constructed life is not at all what she thought it was. When you find a little quiet time once you've settled in in Cincy, you must get this book. It's the best book I've read in ages. Anon–You know it's still hard to put something like this into practice. I used to think my experience of having a daughter with special needs was reflective of all parents who have children with special needs. Now I know it's not. There are situations much more difficult and draining mentally, emotionally and financially. I think it's good to reflect on things you can change–like attitude and perspective–but it's also OK to admit that it IS a drain and that it IS hard. Please don't align your blog with this garbage. This company has shady credentials and is listed as a multilevel marketing scam. The point of this trip is not to help Rwandans, but to
go and exploit them ("Tell their stories" – read: Use their lives as marketing tools for people to buy more jewelry) and then encourage more privileged Americans to buy overpriced jewelry at a markup these Rwandans do not get a fair percentage of. Do some research and I know you'll withdraw your entry. As someone who does so much good for the special needs community, please don't tarnish your reputation by jumping on this bandwagon without digging deep into what this company truly stands for. Anon–Hi! So I can see where you're coming from and wanted to make sure this company isn't as terrible as you make them sound…but I can't find anything negative about them. Do you have a link, an article, or something you'd like to share? In one respect I get that "sharing their stories" can be used as a marketing tool in a negative sense, but it can also be used in a positive sense. They are a company, of course they want to sell their product. If they manage to do that AND help people in Rwanda at the same time (by giving them a fair wage for their amazing skills) I'm not sure I see it as exploiting them. There were several blogs written by previous Noonday ambassadors, however since the negative attention garnered from Kelle Hampton's blog they have suspiciously been deleted completely. These blogs corroborated the notion of "poverty tourism" – one was a woman describing her trip and complaining about how dirty the conditions were, how her heels got ruined, accompanied by photos of local children whose names she did not know. I suggest you read the comments on Kelle's Noonday post, the bottom third address many valid questions and concerns about this company. The main problem is that they do not provide ANY details as to what constitutes a "livable wage" nor how this translates to sales of their jewelry. Because they refuse to give financial details and keep reiterating "livable wage", it appears that Noonday pays these artisans a fixed amount regardless of how much jewelry is sold or at what price. So think about it – sending bloggers to Rwanda to meet with an artisan (whose job description as a Noonday worker requires her to meet these bloggers) so that they can come home and "tell her story" and encourage people to buy more jewelry does not benefit this woman whose story is told. She does not decide the narrative. She is a genocide survivor whose story is diminished, exploited and peddled so that Noonday can create more "ambassadors" and sell more product. If you truly want to help these women and believe your presence, your face and camera in front of them, could do more good for them as human beings than a donation of the cost of a plane ticket, I encourage you to look into a more reputable charity who actually wants to help these women, and not use their lives and circumstances to endorse the sale of jewelry of which they do not get a fair share of the profit.
Start with the comment section on Kelle's post, and if you're still curious about how Noonday actually compensates these women I hope you have better luck finding out answers than the hundreds of others who have tried. ReplyCancel

i think it helps to remember it doesnt make you a bad person if you are sometimes awkward! it happens to everyone sometimes. i remember my older sister telling me about the first time she met her friend "john". my sister has spinabifida and has been in a chair her whole life, yet when she met john, who has no arms and no legs, she said she kept having to remind herself to stop staring. she said she felt like a…a word i wont repeat here. they are now good friends and can joke about other peoples reactions. its not so bad to be awkward initially, as long as you can acknowledge it and then try to fix it. Having painted the first room in our house with Behr paint cause we didnt know better I would NEVER use it again. I do like the snowbound color. It is a white white with maybe the tiniest bit of warmth to it but not yellow. I have Sherwin Williams white on other walls and it seens too cool. I love Sherwin Williams paint. the Emerald line is incredible. The coverage compared to Behr is night and day. And they have 40 percent off sales regularly so the price is comparable to Behr and you use less paint. I have never used Benjamin Moore. The stores are never as convenient. Also it seems almost all the professional painters here default to Sherwin Williams.ReplyCancel

Ooooooh! Paint!!! I have found the color of paint that just looks great no matter where you put it. My sister started the whole thing and absolutely anyone who has seen it in her house has used it in his or her own. It is a great neutral strong enough to be interesting but versatile enough to allow for any decor. Although Benjamin Moore, I'm sure you could color match it with Behr. OK, Bleeker Beige. Love it! I have used Benjamin Moore as well as other brands. Hands down Benjamin Moore has been superior for coverage and durability. We have hired painters that have used our own paint and everytime they see that it is Benjamin Moore they are giddy with excitement. The Behr paint may be cheaper but you will end up using twice as much! ReplyCancel

Benjamin Moore Simply White – we used it for all our trim and wainscoting. We used Shale by BM on the walls- check it out-it's a cross between grey and beige. I've never commented before, but I love stopping by here! I couldn't resist providing my two cents, since I just painted an entire house and know how overwhelming it can be. I haven't used Behr, but my mom has, and says (as others have mentioned above) the coverage is terrible, so in the end you spend the same as the more expensive brands. I ended up going with Restoration Hardware colors matched to Sherwin Williams paint, which is what my painter preferred. It turned out great. I've also used Benjamin Moore and it had solid coverage as well. Good luck!ReplyCancel

So what about the consumer reports? There are all different levels of quality within the same paint brand. Perhaps those of you who used Behr used one that was a lower quality. As shown in our iPhone pic of the consumer reports magazine the Behr Premium Plus Satin Enamel was ranked #5, well below Benjamin Moore's Aura line. The only Behr line rated above (and again #1–and according to CR, on par with BM in coverage) is the Behr Premium Plus ULTRA Satin Enamel. I'm curious if anyone has used that line specifically and still prefers BM.

Ive painted two homes. Both With Behr and had no problems. So unsure what the negatives would be from my perspective. We have painted furniture as well. We did paint our kitchen cabinets with a SW paint…simply white and love it…but honestly didn't see that much difference in quality. I do think painting is an art, and unless your careful and really do a good job…My husband is a much better painter( attention to detail) and so not sure if my work looked as good as his did…but the paint wasn't the issue it was the painter! ( me!!) 🙂 Have fun with it and try not to get caught up in those types of things go with something that you love and in your budget. Not worth blowing $ you don't have on paint. That's what the big stuff is for! ( carpet, tile, cabinets, sinks etc the stuff that is perm. Paint can be changed quickly and cheaply if you want later)!!!ReplyCancel

Hi Miggy — never commented before, but having just painted the entire interior of our house (well, we hired a painter to do it), I thought I'd throw in my two cents. The first half of our painting project was the first floor (kitchen, family room, dining room, living room) and we used Behr (their highest quality) and our painter hated using it. He strongly recommended we use Sherwin Williams for the second half of the project (upstairs — bedrooms, bathrooms) and he was happy and I think the quality was better. I think it's probably similar to Benjamin Moore. I'm a long-time subscriber to Consumer Reports and often use them as a guide, but try not to put my full faith in them. Besides, they'd have you believe that the model car I'm driving is a piece of junk, but after 5 years of driving it, I still love it and my favorite car yet in 30 years of driving! I have always been a bit of a BM snob and really do like their colors.
However, on a whim, I bought some Behr paint and was very impressed. Their paint/primer (highest quality) covered a dark red wall in ONE coat. I was shocked. It didn't spray all over either.I used Behr color matched for BM for ceilings and it worked well there too.
I used BM to cover a very neutral wall with another neutral and it took a couple of coats – I was pretty shocked! I used the highest quality BM oil to paint kitchen cabinets and it is beautiful and very durable. Simply White is a great color IMHO. Not too white or too yellow.
So, this is a mixed review but I think I will go with Behr, color matched to BM on walls and stick with BM for trim…ReplyCancel

We bought a house 6 months ago and we've painted a few rooms with Behr paints (also because of the good Consumer Reports review). We've had no problems. When we moved, we must have been put on some type of "new homeowners" list because Sherwin-Williams sent us a coupon for a free big ol' color wheel swatch thing (spacing what it's called for some reason), so we've had some of the Behr paint color matched.
We hired guys to paint the trim and they used Benjamin Moore for that. But for us, no problems with Behr. The walls did take two coats, but that's what we expected.ReplyCancel - cherylMay 9, 2014 - 3:04 pm
I love supporting local business so when a family opened a hardware in town and started selling B enjamin Moore paint, I bought a can. OH MY WORD!!! it was by far the best paint I have ever bought! When on so smooth, just thick enough not to drip…kinda a dreamy time painting my kitchen cabnets. Yes the colors are great, and my family must have a good color eye. Last January I pulled a copy of Souther living out of my mail box and saw a "man cave" home painted with BM paint…oh look honey..the same colors as our den and living room, I just didn't know it was man cave…but I do have all boys… In white..I like a touch of under tone, blue or pinkish in bedrooms and off white or paper white in the kitchen. ENJOY the house..I loved, loved loved your midcentry one and I'll miss it….but I cannot wait to see what you do this time around.ReplyCancel

The only time I've splurged for BM paint is when I paint furniture or cabinets– the Advance line is awesome! Otherwise, I've always color-matched to Behr and haven't had a problem. My mom worked for a painting company and they swore by BM paint, but it's just soooo expensive, I haven't been able to justify it. (Paint is supposed to be the inexpensive part of re-decorating, right?!) ReplyCancel

I love love love Behr Ultra paint. It is the best. Way better then Aura, and soo much cheaper. BM charges you to tint paint too, so it can be even more money. If you are doing dark colors, the trick is to wait 24 hours between coats. If you are covering a dark color, wait 24 hours again between coats. It is very durable and the coverage is amazing compared to other brands. I am not sure what people are talking about when they say it is no good. And I actually like Eggshell for walls over Satin and Matte though. And Satin for furniture. The cool thing with Ultra paint is that you can use any finish anywhere in the house. So you dont have to put satin in bathrooms anymore, or eggshell only in bedrooms. You can put eggshell everywhere, so then you dont see the imperfections 🙂
If you are painting the metal bed frame, I would prime it first though, to ensure it is going to stick. ( I would do this with any paint, even if it is a "paint and primer in one".ReplyCancel- AnonymousMay 13, 2014 - 12:43 am

My husband grew up with parents who were painting contractors and has done A LOT of painting and used every supplier under the sun. He is now a general contractor and we just finished building our third home ourselves. We ended up using the Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin throughout our entire house. My husband said it has the best coverage he has ever seen. We have young children that are HARD on walls and it is holding up beautifully.
With that said, we didn't use a single Behr color…we color matched to either BM or Sherwin Williams colors. It turned out great and I would do it again and again.
Also, Home Depot has great sales on their paint a few times a year, combine that with the fact that they will match a Lowe's coupon and you are getting it for even cheaper.
