Hi! Once again it’s time for another installment of Miggy’s Favorite Things Lately where I share some things I’m loving as of late. Namely, something to wear, something to read, something to watch and something to eat. You can see the one, two, threeand four here. Enjoy! I’d love to hear some of your favorites in the comments. FYI, none of this content is sponsored and there are no affiliate links.
Wear: Van’s High top Sneakers. I wear a lot of booties, loafers and sandals. It’s been a while since I’ve had a good sneaker that I’m in love with, but these are it. They are comfy and cool and don’t even get me started on the perfect rust color. They’re just the right accessory to take a basic jeans + t-shirt ensemble to the next level. I’ve had older people admire them as well as my own kids! And we all know that if your kids actually admit something you wear is cool, then you’re golden. Fist bump.
Read: Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. I will do a whole post on what I’ve been reading lately, but right now I need to talk about Jane Eyre. Yes I know it’s really old and a lot of people have been reading it for like a hundred years or something so I’m probably not telling you anything new, but HEY GUYS TURNS OUT JANE EYRE IS A GOOD BOOK. As much as I love all the new books that pop up on everyone’s must read lists, there is something so very comforting about the classics. I was actually afraid to start this book because I didn’t want to waste my precious audiobook credit on a book that I might not finish. I was worried that it would be too slow or that only people who belong to literary cultscould appreciate it. Yes it is slow but not boring. It’s slow in the way we are all looking to slow down these days–for more time to connect, to notice the small details and for the sake of character development. This is hardly an enlightening recommendation as I’m sure many of you have already read this brilliant, beautiful novel, but if you’re a hold out like me, give it a try. I listened to Thandie Newton’s recording on Audibleand highly recommend it. (Afterward I purchased the Penguin clothbound classicbecause regardless of what Marie Kondo says I need more books in my life.)I’m definitely going to dig into more classics.
Watch: Derry Girls on Netflix. If you went to high school in the 90’s this show is nostalgia-riffic. However, since it also takes place in Ireland during the Northern Ireland Conflict(don’t worry, had to Google that)there is this whole other level that is really intriguing and educational for a spoiled American brat like me. But the real draw of the show is that it’s downright hilarious. Awkwardly and irreverently so. And with only 6 30-minute episodes, you can binge this one fast without missing too much of your real life. Don’t forget to turn on the There is a lot of cussing and some sexual references, so if that bothers you stay away. But there is also just good old fashioned teenage angst, tenderness and a high school girl gang that would beat the crap of out those 90210 kids.
Eat: Sheet Pan Fajitas from Our Best Bites. OBB is a go-to blog for family meals in my house and these sheet pan fajitas are a recent hit. Fajitas are awesome, but also a lot of work. I’m not sure I’ve ever made them at home. But sheet pan dinners are easy! So what happens when you mix the two together? An awesome + easy meal. Also, this is the type of thing I double or even triple and eat the leftovers for dayyyys. They work well as fajitas or served over rice and the more options I can give my kids, the happier eaters I have.
What have you been loving lately? Share below please! Also, if you could recommend the next classic for me to read what would it be? I’ve already done Anna Karenina and Les Miserable (and others, but I figured those would be common recommendations.)
Oo, read The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins! It’s a Victorian who done it – suspenseful, just the right amount of spooky, and the mystery isn’t easy to deduce 50 pages in.
Noted! Thanks!
Just read Jane Eyre for the first time as well! I was avoiding it for all of the same reasons you listed but I read it anyway and I absolutely loved it! It’s incredible! I’m trying to add in more of the classics to my long list of books this year even though they’re intimidating as hell!
So glad I’m not the only one! I’m thinking a Jane Austen next… never read one but I sure do love the movies! ?
Another good watch is “Schitt’s Creek” — it’s so funny and sweet! I’ve heard from other that it might take a couple episodes to get into (I honestly cant’ remember thinking that myself), but I’d highly recommend! Gah, Moira and David on the show are SO funny!
Love your recommendations — thanks!
