As I was perusing the Land of Nod catalog the other day I came across this I’m not bored anymore Art Jar. Very clever, I thought. That would make a great present for Sassy pants (3 year old). The description says:
We loaded a jumbo plastic jar full of funky art supplies like googly eyes, pom-poms, pipe cleaners, glue pens, construction paper, wavy craft scissors, wooden buttons, spools, beads, craft sticks and more. Heck, we could go on and on, but we don’t want to bore you. Tons of potential projects. Just add imagination.
Then I thought…wait a minute, that’s $30… I could just make my own Art jar! Duh. Then I thought, (yes more thinking) Well maybe it would actually cost more, or about the same to make my own jar…so maybe it is a good deal.
Hmmmm…what do you think? Is $30 worth it, or could you make your own art jar for cheaper? The jar alone seems like it would be $8-$10.
Could you make it cheaper and cooler? What would you include?
Awesome Idea–Here's one way to make it cheaper (and recycle!woohoo)I have a jar (well, its actually a plastic container that held Pretzel twists that I got from Costco). I think you could get all that other stuff from a craft store for under $10. Bam. However,I don't think $30 is too bad if you can just order it online and have it show up at your doorstep ready to distract child. Thanks for sharing.

Yes! I was going to suggest the pretzel jar too! I would include paper doll cut-outs with blank pre-cut clothes to color, glue, and glitter. Sounds fun!
i am in the middle of making two for my babes out of one of those plastic animal cracker bears – ya know, the ones from target? just stick some paper over the label. i have everything else: mostly leftovers from some of my crafting projects. mine will end up being so much cheaper than 30 and it's all stuff i already have. so, yes! do it yourself for cheap.
I don't know…I kinda like the idea of buying it without the hassle of getting it all together. Going out with the kids these days is such a joke, I try to do as much online shopping as I can.
I saw the same exact idea, a jar filled with endless crafting possibilities, at Homegoods not too long ago. I think it was around $15 dollars!
cute idea in theory, but here is my problem — what a mess! I would imagine that container getting dumped every time it was going to be used.
Here is what I would do. An artist suitcase. Get a little vintage suitcase from a thrift store and find vintage jars and little coin purses to fill with the goodies. If it was me I would go nuts trying to find the red colored pencil in that jar or the googly eyes…
on the other hand maybe it fosters more creativity to have it all jumbled….
also hit the thrift stores for supplies — I have found pom poms, pipe cleaners and googly eyes while thrifting, Always ask if they have sewing notions. sometimes they are somewhere you wouldn't look. I always buy old sewing boxes full of thread, buttons , needles, yarn, etc. You will be surprised what you can find there! Well, maybe you won't be because you are a pro-thrifter.
I think you'd still spend $30… and honestly, while it looks cute in the package, the stuff isn't going to STAY in the container – it's going to be dumped out. So I say, enjoy the beauty of the catalog photo and leave it at that 🙂
Instead of putting paper over the lables… paint over them with black board paint! I do that with all kinds of containers to re-use them!
