The hubs and I are garage sale junkies. There are so many reasons I love a good garage sale, in some ways even more than a thrift/antique store. First off, there is a lot less stuff than at an actual thrift/antique store so you don’t have nearly as much digging to do. Also, haggling… you can haggle at a garage sale, but not usually at a thrift store. And of course the most obvious reason is that a garage sale is just a precursor to what ends up at a thrift store… garage sales are filled with stuff that people think still holds value, so they sell the good stuff and whatever is left over {ie the junk} gets sent to goodwill afterwards. Anway, here are some more specific reasons and finds from the last couple weeks…
So this doll bed. I HAD to have it. Beanie didn’t care that much, but I HAD to have it…for her, obviously. {She’ll thank me later!… I tell myself.} I LOVE finding vintage treasures like this. It’s a great way to get unique toys with charm. I’m planning on making a little mattress, sheet set and quilt for this bed. Emphasis on the planning. Anyway, unique stuff.
Second, fabric. This whole stash cost me 3 dollars. There are 15 bundles in there…sooooo that’s a good deal in case you missed the point.
Third, vintage fabric. Vintage fabric often comes in the form of sheet sets or pillow cases–which is what this fabric happens to be. I LOVE this fabric and can’t wait to find the perfect project/occasion to use it.
And finally, I love finding those items that you’ve been wanting to buy but just haven’t…and now you’ve found them for much cheaper. Latch lid jars can run $7-8 per jar. These cost $.50 a jar.
So now that it’s summa’ time I hope you take advantage of all the garage sale fun. My only warning…it may become a small addiction. So watch yourself. {And check for bed bugs.}
great finds! Man, did you make friends with the girl with the cool fabric? She has good taste! LOVE that doll bed. You will make it up so cute.
I am loving on your bloomers lately too. If I have a girl, this is my first stop shop. I love a little ruffle bum.
i love your finds too! i may need to make this a hobby of mine. I think garage sale-ing and I could become good friends.
Okay – glad you said the bedbug thing because that's a real concern in Cincy that has kept us away from thrifting lately. How do you check for them? Any tips
(Love the doll bed btw, would've had to have that one too!)
Likely–If you're having a girl let me know…bloomers will be sent!
Erin–you'd love garage sale-ing!
Carrie–yeah about that…we're probably not as careful as we should be, but stuff like the doll bed and glass jars are obviously easy to check….not many places to hide. BUT for stuff like fabric…well we got that stuff in Hyde Park and sorta figured it wasn't a BB neighborhood….not that it couldn't still be, but I guess we just didn't worry about it. But if you do buy clothing/fabric it's always a good idea to throw everything in the dryer right when you get home for a while. That kills bb's. Also, you can always keep a spray bottle of 90 proof rubbing alcohol and spray it on things as a precaution–that kills the BB's and the eggs. I'm actually glad you made me think about that…I think I'll be extra careful in the future.
i want to make out with that vintage fabric! not really, though. it's just a figure of speech, okay?
Oh – good call on the dryer & the alcohol idea. THANKS!!!!!
I am always searching online for articles that can help me. There is obviously a lot to know about this. I think you made some good points in Features also. Keep working, great job!
