Hey guys! Things have still been slow on the uptick around here, but I’m hoping that will change soon as I start to get into more of a rhythm. That said, I don’t think I’ll ever be a daily blog publisher, but if I can get 2-3 posts a week that will be great. I know many of you are hoping I’ll get back into the “Special Needs Spotlight” and I’m hoping to get that up and running soon. That said, I’m going to be tweaking it a little–nothing too major–but I just wanted to give you a heads up.
In addition to bringing the spotlight back, what are some other kinds of content you’d like to see on here? Home decor, style, craft/DIY projects, recipes? If there’s anything you would love to see more of let me know!
But I love a good link round up and while I don’t do them very often, every once in a while I like to do it. (Would you like more link round ups?) Here are a handful of links from around the web this week.
The best thing on the internet all week?
Is fat the worst thing a person can be? JK Rowling doesn’t think so.
My favorite newly discovered song.
My friend Jackie’s home tour was featured on Design Mom this week and I loved every word and photo. Jackie is an artist and I love her thoughts about being an artist and mother, “I think to keep showing up and making work while still raising children is a sign of more dedication, not less. To make room in your life and home for this passion, it is the harder road.” YES to all the men (and some women) who assume that a woman who has children isn’t “serious” about her career.
Wow… how about Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s leaked photos of him in blackface? While I still respect him more than our current President, no doubt about it, this is a HUGE disappointment. And I can’t help but think about Dave Chappelle’s recent special that focused so much on “cancel” culture… in short Chappelle disagrees with celebrities like Kevin Hart being canceled as the host of the Oscars for offensive homophobic tweets he sent a decade ago, but would that opinion be different for Trudeau? To be clear I found a lot of Chappelle’s show offensive and disagreed with much of the premise, but the cancel culture is something I go back and forth on. Should past mistakes–even serious ones–be forgiven in light of people’s current opinions and policies? Is it a case by case basis? What are your thoughts?
Recreating iconic art through the lens of disability… YES PLEASE.
Speaking of disability, did you see that Lamp started dance classes this week? I was caught off guard with how emotional it made me… in a good way.
Really wanting one of these this fall. (Black seems like the classic no brainer, but maybe rust?)
Did you catch Jenny Komenda’s discussion of etiquette on her IG this week? If not it’s a must read. Go to her etiquette highlight.
I didn’t know who Caroline Calloway was until this article, but I find the whole thing intriguing.
Alt Summit voting for presenters is this week and I’ve got three presentations I’ve thrown my hat in the ring for. I’m especially hoping to teach about the importance of Disability representation with my friend Rebekah Taussig (who you may remember here and here)–and we’d love your vote! You can go here to vote. I’d also love to present on How I got a Children’s Book deal and How to Slay Your Days at Alt Summit (which I honestly LOVE teaching!)
Thanks and have a great weekend!
XO,
Miggy
Hey. I totally agree with your thought about the most recent Design Mom Home tour. Figuring out how to forge a space for my own creative work and to do this in the presence of my kids I think has been Significant. If we are the most present example for our kids of how an adult moves in the world, then I sure all get out want to make sure that I am showing them that an adult can be a parent, can work, can have their own active friendships and can pursue her own art and have joy in all of it.
I am always fond of a new recipe find. Particularly from folks who have kids who perhaps have varying levels of food adventurousness? What are the Keeper recipes-the ones that find their way to the table tried-and-true?
Also, more kid book recommendations? I have a new reader and an experienced reader who is now foraying into solid chapter book territory, so it’s a new world for both of them. I am always psyched to have new titles to find for them.
Thanks for all the recommendations! These are great! And yes, I hope my kids appreciate my endeavors, if not now, one day.
I would love to hear about and see a tour of your new home and how you made it accessible for everyone.
Yes! I am still decorating but I hope to do a home tour soon-ish!
