The husband and I are going to Paris in a few weeks and (this seems strange to say) I’ve barely thought about it at all! But now that it’s getting closer and closer I’m sorta like wait… I’m going to Paris in a few weeks!! While I am really, really excited for Paris, this will be our third trip solo trip ever away from our kids and it’s still hard to do every time. I’m a nervous nelly and honestly one of the reasons I haven’t thought that that much about this trip is the fact that I haven’t wanted to think about leaving the kids. BUT after talking with Grandma and Grandpa the other night I know they’ll be in good hands and I’m starting to get really excited.
Some Americans in Paris
This will be my first trip to Paris and only my second time to Europe. (I went to Italy a few years ago –to Cinque Terre, Rome and Venice–on a girls trip with some good friends and it was a dream.)
The last trip the Mr. and I took together was a couple years ago to NYC on our 10 year wedding anniversary. Since we moved there two weeks after our wedding and lived there for 4 years it seemed only appropriate to go back for the big 10. We slept in, ran in Central Park, and ate amazing food and did Sleep No More–a live interactive theatre experience. (If I could go back in time I would get tickets to see a little play that was opening the same weekend we happened to be in the city… a little play called Hamilton. Waaaaa!)
5 years before that we took a super dreamy vacation to the Cook Islands in the South Pacific. I remember doing a bigger excursion or adventure each day, and then also watching a movie every afternoon in the middle of the day “just because we could.” Everything about this trip was so great.
Whether its across the pond, or even in a hotel across the city I think it’s so great for couples to get away every now and again without the kids. This will be our longest trip away from them though, so I know it’s also going to be hard. I’ll console myself with French bread and macarons… I think I’ll be OK.
The one thing we did manage to do was to get a great AirBnB in a cute little neighborhood within walking distance from the Eiffel Tower and right across from a metro station. Of course we plan to hit all the major sites–The Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, Versailles, Notre Dame, Champs Elysees, and I really want to hit up the Antique market–but if you have any recommendations that are a little off the beaten path I’d love to hear them! Especially any food recommendations! I don’t want a huge list, but rather if you had one place you could eat at again where would it be?
This sounds fun! We've never had a no-kids trip, so I can only imagine how stressful it is to leave the kids for that long.
I LOOOVED the Sacre Coeur and wished we had spent more time hanging around on the steps and trying out restaurants near it. We came up a bunch of steps from the side where we couldn't see it so when we got to the top it felt like it jumped out of nowhere and it was breathtaking. Enjoy your trip!
My husband and I went in April and ate so many incredible things. Le Comptoir du Relais on the left bank is an incredible spot for a sunny bistro lunch on the sidewalk and would be great for dinner too. Similarly, near Sacre Coeur is Le Relais Gascon, another great bistro spot for lunch – get one of their incredible salads, which are covered in fried garlic potatoes. I would head to those two spots again in a heartbeat.
If you don't already have your tickets for the Louvre definitely get them online ahead of time and save yourself the long line.
And wear comfy sneakers! I saw lots of French women in cute little tennis shoes so I did not feel too "American" in my ECCO leather sneakers 🙂 Enjoy every moment!!!
The Cluny museum, the Musée des Arts et Métiers (museum of arts & inventions – really amazing and also has a fantastic steampunk metro station), Sainte Chapelle (esp if they are having any concerts), a run in Luxembourg Gardens, Île Saint-Louis
something a little different ..visit the Catacombs! Amazing world beneath Paris!!
