I knew PSP wanted a unicorn party a few months ago. Oy, how can I get out of this? I thought. Maybe we could have it at one of those bouncy house places or another party location that would basically take over any party planning on my part. But money, time and the desire for some home-made fun won out. We’ve put off most of the prep work until the week before–typical–and as I watch my simple plans become more complex by the minute I start wondering, why do we do this to ourselves? We’ve got 18 unicorn horns to make, a rainbow cake to bake, posters to print off and incredibly still more shopping…. why are we doing this again? Then I look out the kitchen window and see this.
A little girl and her dad making a unicorn piñata for her birthday party. And thats why we do it… because I don’t think that little girl will ever forget making a unicorn piñata with her dad. I hope she never forgets, because seriously how many dads will make a unicorn piñata for their 6 year olds birthday party? She was so excited to help.
I’m not gonna lie… of course part of the reason we do it is for ourselves. I want a pretty party so I can take pretty pictures and post them on my (sometimes) pretty blog. Even without the blog, I want her party to look cool, to be cool. Why do something if we’re not going to do it well? I don’t think it’s totally vain. But at the heart of it I really, really want my daughter to remember that we tried, that we did some cool stuff for her on her birthday because we love her. Part of my love language is gifts, special occasions, surprises that sort of stuff… so it makes sense that I’d want to do it for them too. My little loves. The shopping, the planning, the building, the insane unicorn crafting… it’s for the special little memories. It’s these special memories, morning kisses, daily devotions of love that I hope will build up over time and serve to inform their minds and their hearts over and over and over again, first whispering then shouting, You are loved. You are special. You matter. Regardless of what happens in that big, bad world out there, you are, were and will always be eternally invaluable.
Besides, thats one freaking awesome unicorn.
Can she have golden hoofs daddy? Can she?
Why yes she can.
Wow, that is a great unicorn!
That is one Impressive Unicorn! I luff the golden hooves. I cannot believe it was made from scratch!!
Gorgeous! Such a happy little girl! Way to go Mom and Dad!
I just made my son and his six team-mates dodgeball t-shirts for thier tournament Friday night. Complete with their last name on the back of the shirt and a bandana to match. This is the stuff that I signed up for being a parent.
That unicorn is awesome! And major dad points. My husband doesn't love all the mess/trouble I get into for,a party, he thinks I go way overboard, but he still loves the big cardboard totoro cutout I made a couple years ago!
I don't do parties (this will shock you, I'm sure), but HOLY CRAP that unicorn is impressive. How in the H-ity-H did he do that?
Also, will he make one for me, too? 🙂
That is beautiful! I often think how lucky your girls are to have a mom like you. I don't suppose you're going to post a tutorial. What are those golden hoofs made of?
That unicorn is amazing. Um, so I know this might be weird, but I have this group of friends and we've had some long running unicorn jokes going on in our group so apparently, I am full of unicorn related ideas. And just in case you need some unicorn related music to play at your party, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TG_RA_IKO6g. I am sure your party will be a wild success.
You know, Miggy, you and your dear ones amaze me, constantly. It will be a fabulous party–how can it not with that stunning unicorn? I really loved this, "But at the heart of it I really, really want my daughter to remember that we tried, that we did some cool stuff for her on her birthday because we love her. Part of my love language is gifts, special occasions, surprises that sort of stuff… so it makes sense that I'd want to do it for them too. My little loves. Very nice. And yes … when you're high on spray paint fumes at 2 in the morning the night before your kid's Indiana Jones-themed party … you start to wonder what you were thinking. But it always ends up being worth the effort. Can't wait to see pretty pictures 🙂
Wow, that is one amazing unicorn!! Way to go dad!! I love what you said about the memories and feeling loved. That is the one thing I want my son to take with him in any situation, that he is loved and will always be loved. I can see the love your family has for each other in every single picture you post.
What an incredible Dad to make a unicorn pinata for his little girl. Those pictures are so sweet and the very loving memories PSP will cherish forever.
Can she have golden hoofs? That is so darn sweet.
My daughter recently asked her daddy if he was a king.
Are you a king, Daddy? she asked. Because I am a princess and I need a king to dance with me.
Man, those babies.
I love seeing what you guys create and how family centered you are! Wish we could be there to help with the party but we'll enjoy the pictures you post. I know if I show Rob this he will curse the day he decided to be a lawyer instead of a dentist. B has such great hours. Lucky you Miggs.
This is the sweetest piñata! I am pretty sure that she will remember it forever! I know I still remember my Rainbow Brite one from when I about the same age. Thanks for the reminder of love and the ways that we express it. I needed that as I stayed up too late designing party supplies for my own's special 6th birthday this week. Boy, they grow so fast!
That unicorn is so pretty i can't believe she'll be ok with smashing it. I vote it stays as a decoration and she keeps it in her bedroom afterwards….to destroy such a beautiful memory. Ok, clearly my childhood feeling are seeping into this response. HA! Happy bday party PSP!!
My daughter had a unicorn party for her 6th birthday! And for all the reasons you stated above was all the crazy effort I put into it. I love it when you wrote, the more time goes on the more complex the planning gets. That's me! Days before the party I come up with this time consuming project that takes over, it's crazy. It's worth it and you're right, she'll never forget it.
oh man. that unicorn will never be forgotten. i try not be too picky when i'm dating, but how in the world do i find someone who can make unicorns!!!? how did you do it?! gosh. he's great. as are you and your people.
Well, I just could not watch the bashing of that unicorn! Oh, it is so very cute!
I am in love with this unicorn. That man of yours is priceless. I hope PSP has a wonderful b-day but it looks like all her dreams have already come true with that gold-hoofed, purple-maned wonder!
