I’m listening to moody fall music, looking at old pictures, feeling nostalgic and missing the east coast today. I miss our old apartment and the view overlooking the Hudson river–yes that picture above was taken from our apartment window. Sometimes I can’t believe we actually lived there. Right in the city, driving up the west side highway or taking the A train pretty much anywhere. While it’s been over 3 years since we moved away, every fall my heart aches to go back. Especially the fall.
I miss apple picking.
I miss roadtrips to places like Boston, Amhurst, Salem, DC, Newport, and Connecticut.
Or day trips to places like Stone Barn Farms, Sleepy Hallow, Terry Town or just over the river to Edgewater.
I miss crunchy leaves and actually needing to wear a hat and jacket.
I miss Thanksgiving traditions with friends and friends of friends.
I miss Central park and the park just down the street.
And the people…don’t even get my started on all the amazing people I miss.Don’t get me wrong, I like our life here and now too.
I’m forever glad that we’re a family of 4 instead of just 3. I like having 2 full bathrooms and enough space to stretch out a bit. But there’s something about living in New York City. Once it gets under your skin it remains forever in your blood and bones.
I’ll always miss it.
My SIL just moved out to NY to attend NYU. I am afraid she will never want to come back {to Minnesota}.
Dawn–Yes I'd prepare for a life long New Yorker if I were you. But at least you'll have a free place to crash. 🙂
Check out Love Creek Orchards. It's a nice little drive from San Antonio. They have a pretty good pumpkin patch too. It's at least a little "fallish." Fall is the season I miss the most since leaving the midwest for San Antonio.
Laura
Thanks Laura! I'll check it out!
I know. I have dreams about it (and the people) all the time and I think about moving back. I have totally unrealistic plans of organizing some massive Washington Heights reunion. It does stay in your blood forever.
Right?? I know I think about what it would look like to move back, but it's pretty unrealistic. A massive WH reunion sounds amazing!
We live in Central NY and go to NYC all the time. Our next trip will be in December. I know what you mean, there is just something about NYC that never leaves you.
Asha–even to live in NY state makes me jealous! It's so beautiful there! And fun that you're close enough for frequent trips to the city. Lucky duck.
Is San Antonio the only place that doesn't have leaves that change colors (I know it's not… but it seems like it!)? Someone told me about Lost Maples State Natural Area which is a little less than 2 hours away. We haven't check it out yet but I'm sorely tempted.
Hi Miggy! I'm relatively new to your blog, and this is the first time I've seen pictures of PSP as a baby. I never realized how much Lamp looks just like her. It's uncanny! And adorable. 🙂
I speak for all of us when I say that you guys left a hole that won't fill up… we still miss you and New York isn't the same without you here. I don't want you to be sad, but it feels good to know that your time here still matters so much to you. This is a place that gets in your blood and bones- well said.
Thank goodness it's a small world and we know our paths will cross again and again.
Erin–You are so sweet and definitely one of the people I was referring to. I find it hard to believe that in an OCEAN of amazing, talented, awesome, creative, cool, kind, funny people we left even a small hole, but I appreciate you telling me that nonetheless. 🙂 And yes, our paths will cross again and again and again…
I miss it too… I was so ready to spread out and buy furniture when we left, but now I just want to downsize again and get a nice 2 bedroom in Morningside Heights:) Want to move there, too, and we can homeschool together:)? Love you! Miss that PSP when she was a tiny walker and a little leaf cruncher! XOXO
Suz–I know…I know… it kills me we can't just meet up at the park (which one??) any ol' time we want. Or do the ol' apartment shuffle…those are some treasured memories. 2 bedroom in morningside sounds awesome to me!
(Oh and I was looking through plenty of PSP and GHG pics while doing this–those two! …miss you guys!!)
In the blood and in the bones, and I'm afraid there is no cure. I'm hoping to go back in the Spring to visit my parents, but I know I will need to do a Fall trip before too long. Let's coordinate this thing.
I've only just found your blog, but I'm loving reading about your beautiful daughters and family. I lived in New York for two years (a long time ago!) and have now lived in Austin for almost ten years since then, but you're absolutely right. There's nowhere quite like New York, even if you love where you live.
