Skirts!

Ever since I made some cute skirts for Sparkle Pants I’ve been in a skirt making mood.  I’m really excited that my new summer skirts are all skirts that I made, not only are they inexpensive and original but I get to be creative and learn some new skillz along the way.  I actually made some of these a while ago, but thought I’d share the results with you now.  

The first skirt was inspired by this Anthropologie skirt below.   I really liked the long maxi length and also the fact that it flared out at the end, slightly mermaid-ish.  

This is my version.  (Sorry the pictures aren’t that great.)  I couldn’t find a stripe knit fabric, so I went with a solid plum.  I wanted to do a tutorial for this skirt but there was a lot of working and reworking of this skirt to get it just right…however, I may do a tutorial in the future as I’d love to try this skirt again but with striped knit fabric.  If I do it, you’ll be the first to know.  

Here is my second skirt.  For this one I used a combination of this tutorial, which taught me how to do pockets and this tutorial which helped me do the waist with the elastic encased inside.   I used a fabric from vintage pillow cases.  I really like this skirt.  I LOVE having pockets and it’s light and airy, however the gathered waist adds some bulk and who wants more bulk around their waist?  Oh well, live and learn…

Lastly, here’s the skirt I made this past weekend.  I know it looks like the skirt I made here, but it’s not…it’s different and it turned out SO much better.  The main difference being that this skirt has a waistband and a zipper.  Taking a cue from Liz I wanted to do a high waisted skirt, but I also wanted pockets…so I sorta combined the pocket tutorial from Freshly Picked and then referenced the tutorial that Liz linked to as well, found here.  Finally, to put in the zipper I used this tutorial (found via Elle Apparel).   That’s what I love about sewing…there are so many different ways to do things and you can sorta pick and choose what you want and throw it all together for a unique item all your own.  

So if you’re at all interested in making your own skirt try one or several of the tutorials above.  Start with something easy, like the gathered skirt and work up to something more challenging like the waistband and zipper (which isn’t all that challenging).  I’m feel like I’m just getting started and I’m super excited to make some more summer skirts!
