A Movie You Should See

This weekend we watched Temple Grandin.  It’s a really well made movie with phenomenal acting, especially on the part of Claire Danes.  (Ms. Danes just won the Golden Globe for this performance.)  The movie is a true story about Temple Grandin, a woman who has autism but who went on to achieve a lot not just in spite of her autism, but because of it.  It’s funny, sad, poignant, but ultimately inspiring and uplifting.  Since Temple grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, the movie also gives you a good look at the history of the misconceptions and perceptions surrounding autism, what they used to think caused autism and how to treat it.  Additionally I think this movie sheds some light on autism in general for those of us who don’t deal with it directly, obviously this is only one side of autism and someone who is on the highly functional side of the disorder, but nevertheless it’s a sensitive and human portrayal.  The movie was on HBO, therefore it wasn’t in theaters but we rented it through redbox, FYI.
As a precursor to the movie you might want to watch Temple’s TED talk here entitled The World Needs All Kinds of Minds:

Seriously, go watch this movie.
