This weekend we watched Temple Grandin. It’s a really well made movie with phenomenal acting, especially on the part of Claire Danes. (Ms. Danes just won the Golden Globe for this performance.) The movie is a true story about Temple Grandin, a woman who has autism but who went on to achieve a lot not just in spite of her autism, but because of it. It’s funny, sad, poignant, but ultimately inspiring and uplifting. Since Temple grew up in the 50’s and 60’s, the movie also gives you a good look at the history of the misconceptions and perceptions surrounding autism, what they used to think caused autism and how to treat it. Additionally I think this movie sheds some light on autism in general for those of us who don’t deal with it directly, obviously this is only one side of autism and someone who is on the highly functional side of the disorder, but nevertheless it’s a sensitive and human portrayal. The movie was on HBO, therefore it wasn’t in theaters but we rented it through redbox, FYI.
As a precursor to the movie you might want to watch Temple’s TED talk here entitled The World Needs All Kinds of Minds:
Seriously, go watch this movie.
I definitely want to watch this. I wish it was on instant play on netflix.
My husband and I loved this movie! We got it through Red Box, too. I would highly recommend it as well. Oh, and thank you for including the video of Temple's speech. I will watch that. We parents of special needs kids/adults love to see people with differences triumph!
Miggs! Her autobiography was required reading when I was in Engineering School at UVA! It was called "Thinking in Pictures", and it was really remarkable. I loved that we, as engineering students, were exposed to her as a visionary and experimental designer. I can't wait to see this film!
I got to see this on HBO a few weeks ago and I cried like a baby. I loved it! And my poor husband had to listen to me talk about humane treatment of cattle in slaughter houses until he was bored to death.
thanks for the recommendation. i've loved claire danes ever since "my so-called life" and i've heard so many great things about temple. the acceptance speech and the golden globes with temple cheering her on was really touching.
Cool, thanks. I will 🙂
Look up views of Temple and her mother at the Oscars! Excellent. This is a great movie on many levels.
Is it positive or negative that my bff told me I was like her….that I see things differently and need to learn how to read social cues?
Wow maybe I should watch it. Dad loves that movie and tries to make me watch it everytime it's on HBO, but I always refuse.
I just had my big lie come out recently haha. Went to Aspen for the X Games with some friends and told everyone I was babysitting for the weekend. Whoops!
Miss you and love you lots! Give everyone hugs and kisses from me!
