My favorite song is probably the one they play on work that I have no ability to remember the name of. It's a running joke, I know the covers better still. Best concert – I've loved every single concert I've attended, they're all the best until next concert. But US tour end of Revamp, Sabaton and Iced Earth remains one of the best.ReplyCancel

Hi,
I have been reading for some time now and really enjoying these spotlights. While I don't have a special needs child (that I know of) I do have a special needs mother who uses a scooter to get around due to MS. Here is my question. If I am out with my two kids (5 and 2) and we were to see someone with a limb difference or a visible disability and my 5 year old points it out, I don't shush her or walk away, however, I DO wonder what to do (and I know every family is different). If for example E said "look mom, she has no hand", how could I respond? I am pretty good at reminding her that everyone is different and the same, and we talk about how her grandma uses a scooter because her legs don't work, but does it make sense to go up to the family/child and talk more? (also understanding that families might not want to be constant billboards for limb differences, blindness, mobility issues, etc.). Any specific ideas would be great!ReplyCancel

  Thank you for asking! This scenario happens a LOT when we are out in public with Addy, and we've had good experiences and some very awful experiences. Usually this kind of thing happens on a playground, and a child notices Addy's arm. Since she's not able to answer the questions herself yet, I tend to jump in with the "Finding Nemo" analogy, explain that it's just like Nemo's lucky fin, that she was just born that way! That's usually enough to satisfy most kids, but occasionally there are some follow ups, most common is if it hurts her. I explain that it doesn't hurt her, and that she can do anything they can do!
  
  If a child directs the question to the parent and I overhear it, I introduce Addy and just let them know that she was born that way, and answer any questions they have. Most families with special kiddos welcome questions, it's the staring and whispering we aren't fans of 🙂

  Thank you for your reply! I feel like we are on the right path, acknowledging differences without making a huge deal about it or whispering or staring. I love my curious kids, but sometimes it is so tricky when that curiosity is directed towards other people.

This looks great. I am envious of the deal you found on those mirrors! I'm hoping for a good mirror in our entry, but of course prices at retailers are lame. Time to shop yard sales, I guess.

I've always been in the ceiling-fans-are-hideous camp, but since we've never owned a house with AC (CURSE YOU OLD HOUSES), my ceiling fans have been necessary. ReplyCancel

  Liv–never owned a house with AC? I'm amazed that you've pulled that off…I guess you don't live in south Texas? 🙂 And in this home I don't think we've turned our fan on once in our MB. It seems to be one of the rooms that gets the coolest…so really, I might ditch it. ReplyCancel

Ace paint and primers (used Clark & Kensington first, then Optimus last year) are OUTSTANDING. Despite having to scrub walls, the only reason I repainted was I was tired of the colors. And my bedroom went from a very deep purple with no wearing or flaws after 39 months to a very very dark navy made by mixing two gallons Midnight Sonata to 1.5 gallons Tomcat. 6 months in, the walls remain flawless in the new darker color. Prior to Ace, I had used Behr. The wear and chipping was awful. I used sealing primers over it to keep the Ace paint nice. The paint under the Behr wasn't wearing or chipping, and the walls were properly cleaned and prepped.

Old house and while I have AC, it's wildly inefficient, I work seconds (so hot part of the day), the house has amazing cross ventilation and high ceilings with transom windows above interior doors and ceiling fans. Using AC in mid July, I can barely get the house to 75° and get an electric bill of $200+. Or I use a bunch of fans set appropriately and worship the ceiling fans – house may get to 76° a few days but it's pretty easy to get rooms to feel like 68-70° at night and I see an electric bill of $50. I'm taking ugly ceiling fans for that savings any day of the week.ReplyCancel

I really like this! I love seeing how when people decorate, it really brings out their own personal style. My old room used to be close to that color and I always felt cozy in there. As far as ceilings fans go, I think of them like mini-vans. They are just too darn practical. We just put on in our room, and also our great room. We've hardly had to use our air this summer- part because of the weather, but also because of the fans (we have a ranch with helps too, not being upstairs). Anyway- we found ours at lows.com which had a more modern/fancier look to match our room a little better. Our great room fan is pretty modern and we found on Amazon at Dan's Fans. We needed a really big one for that room because of our high ceilings. I sometimes don't love it dangling down, but I think overall, I'm pleased we have it.ReplyCancel
