I always thought they made a big difference too. Until we had a sweet enrichment night about how to care for your hair. I learned lots of things that have made a world of difference with my frizzy, curly hair. I use treseme. So, it's not suave, but it's not Aveda. Anyway I won't leave all the details, but I still have the hand out. Wonderful.
i'm a bumble and bumble girl. it makes a huge difference. especially with wavy hair. most store shampoos make my hair heavy, but these ones are light and a little bit goes a long way. and shine is genetics, but products help that out loads. i'd go grocery store makeup before i'd go to grocery store hair products.
I notice that my hair is easier to do & comes out better when I use better shampoo. I've been using Sleek Look (in the orange bottle) since August (when Matt's hairdresser cousin who I totally trust told me to buy it). When I decide to skimp and use herbal essence instead, it's just not the same. Also, don't need to use mousse or hairspray or anything with the SL stuff. I'm sold on the expensive stuff.

I'm very interested to hear about this hair care info. We'll have to chat…and yes that's what I'm wondering about too–somewhere in the middle. Because I've used the hub's Suave a couple times and yikes…I can definitely tell a difference with the uber cheap stuff.
Care–Well you do have great hair. I also love B&B–I bought some of their deep conditioner for Christmas. Love it. And I think I'm leaning more toward what you said… grocery make up before hair stuff.

I've heard it's all about the conditioner. So, I save and buy cheap shampoo and expensive conditioner and can tell a good difference.
i, like you, was convinced by a roommate to use fancy salon shampoo. specifically redken. it was like $25 a bottle. I have now downgraded to supermarket brands that cost under $10 a bottle, etc., and i really don't see a difference. except that my salon friend looks down on me.

Once in high school my lil kindergarten brother brought home lice and gave me some. The Rit shampoo treatment was awesome to my hair. Don't think it's preferable for everyday use, but I was impressed.
Funny thing, I'm all about skin care and makeup. I use the cheap stuff on my hair but splurge for the nicer makeup. Treseme seems to treat me right. I don't notice much of a difference at all when I use expensivo except for the great smell. (Love Aveda). But I have SHORT straight hair that is "easy" hair. I have been wondering this same thing myself so I'm so glad you put this out there to discuss.
I think healthy shiny hair has to do with genes and nutrition first. Not to brag but . . . I have always had healthy shiny hair without too much matter what I washed it with. However, for the past few years I have been using JASON daily shampoo and conditioner (fragrance free) and I like it. For what it's worth. Your hair also seems lovely.
I've tried a lot of things. A LOT. And I'm obsessed with the suave salon imitation stuff they sell at target for $1.77. It's faux Redken, Matrix (my fave) and Nexxus. But not the regular suave stuff. But, it isn't organic. Your prob better off staying with aveda for health reasons. Oh, and omega 3 supplements.
I go back and forth. I have big liters of salon stuff, and then buy nicer grocery-store lines to switch it up. That has been my protocol – I think switching it up is crucial so that your hair doesn't get build-up and used to the same products. My favorite salon: Biolage, Paul Mitchell lavender/mint tea tree oil, and I LOVE B&B, but haven't had the heart to shell out the money for it for years. For drug store brands, I really like John Frieda, especially Root Awakening (smells really good). Also like anything Dove. For styling products, I've found it's best to go salon.
I never use fancy shampoo, I don't think it makes that much difference to my hair. Then again, I don't wash my hair that often, either. I might wash it twice a week. I style it everyday, but my type of hair looks better and less frizzy with more body if I wash it less.
I usually use Treseme, or Pantene.
FYI- target now sells bumble & bumble amongst a handful of other salon products & they're cheaper than they were in the salon. YEAH!
