Thank you so much for all these “Special Needs Spotlights,” they really help me better understand what it's like to raise a child with special needs and how to respond appropriately. I especially love Lily's story. She is beautiful and I can clearly see that she brings so much joy to her family and to the world! Some of the sweetest people I know have Downs Syndrome and I absolutely love all of them to death! And I am so glad that Lily has been born into such an amazing and accepting family with a sense of humor to help them through the challenges they may encounter. So very happy that Lamp has a new friend, Jessie. I just know Jessie and her mom will be an invaluable asset to your entire family.
Oh, Miggy! There is nothing like connecting with another mom who walks in your shoes! I am beyond thrilled for you that you met up with Jessie and her mom and that they gave you such a hopeful vision of the future! I was so absolutely struck by the photos of Jessie passing a marker from her foot to Lamp's! What an awesome moment to have recorded. And I love LOVE that Lamp says, "My friend Jessie." The last 2 posts are so awesome! So happy for you and especially Lamp. I hope Lamp's friend Jessie will keep in touch. It is important for Lamp now and will become even more important later. Hope you guys can meet more friends that will show you and Lamp awesomeness in differences.
My kids and I just looked through these incredible pictures, and Jonah said in an impressed voice, "How does she DO that?" I asked him how these pictures make him feel and he said, "AMAZED!"
Lucie just sat in silence and then all of a sudden she started requesting goldfish… she got the idea from the pic of Lamp eating goldfish with her toes. haha! I told her sure, and I'm not kidding, Jonah said, "Mom my, I want to eat my goldfish with my toes too!"

The power of mentoring is amazing! I have a daughter born without both legs, her right arm above the elbow and left arm/hand differences. We found a body-double mentor for her when she was around 2 yrs old. Now, my daughter is almost 16 and mentors another little girl. It's come full circle! We belong to a group call I-CAN (International Child Amputee Network) and have found the interactions between families, both online and in person to be invaluable. Don't let the word "amputee" throw you off, it's a group of kids and mentors with limb differences, acquired or congenital. I'd be happy to talk to you if you're interested. The Botanical Gardens are great too! And, they have a wonderful cafe!!
If you are in for a roadtrip, check out Camp Verde. It was the site of the famed "camel experiment" in the 1850 when they were training camels for supply carriers for the army. We went this weekend. They have a beautiful general store and a cafe (only open for lunch, with unbelievable huge sandwiches). My parents, my daughter and I ate there and it was less than 20 bucks. Beautiful scenery, especially if you take the back roads.

What a sweet smile in that first picture of Malina!
Amanda, you said you don't know exactly what to expect in your journey with Malina because her chromosomal deletion is a rare one. I also have a special needs son whose journey was/is something of a mystery as well. He had obvious difficulties from birth, but genetic testing didn't show up any known syndrome. Although our situations aren't the same, what IS the same is that we never really know/knew what to expect in his development either. He is a young adult now.
