Yes I know what you mean. When adding your second there seems to be a lot of pro's to same gender and a lot of pro's to opposite gender. Personally, I loved having the same gender back to back. That being said, I know a lot of mama's really want a girl around the house. Baby/toddler girl energy is usually quite different from baby/toddler boy energy. 🙂 Not that one is better than the other, but different. Good luck!ReplyCancel
Congratulations!!! I was only lucky enough to have twin boys but have always yearned for a girl. There are many times I feel left out in my own house because all of the boys are doing boy things and I'm not necessarily into all of that. It would be so nice to have a girl to do girly things with. I grew up with all sisters- there were 4 of us. It was the best. My dad had us mow the lawn, go on grueling camping trips with him, and took us to shoot clay pigeons with rifles. He doesn't feel like he missed out on a single thing. My mom was obviously a natural at raising girls and has always been a really great example of a strong woman in our lives. The thing I loved about my parents is that they never compared us to one another- they let us be who we are, and that has established a really wonderful bond between us. I love hearing stories about families of sisters. Can't wait for B to see this comment–he mentioned almost everything you said specifically–ha! Even mowing the lawn. But I told him his girls could do all those things with him. So glad to hear your dad had you girls doing the dirty work right along with them. Full disclosure: his parents were both divorced when they married each other, but they were 5 boys plus 3 boys, and then they had Matt- another boy! I had three sons. I decided that we would stop there. Gave everything away and we merrily went on our way. Well…….my youngest turned seven and I changed my mind. I was thirty six and I just wasn't ready to be done with babies. I wanted one more, so we got busy. Abigail rang in the new year on Dec 31 at 10:35 p.m. While I didn't have all one sex there was a pretty big gap between the boys and Abigail. The boys did most everything together, very, very close. This girl shook things up. My youngest son informed me that he would always be the baby boy. He still lays claim to that a twenty three. We really do have two babies of the family. We have been living in Saudi Arabia for the last five years with our daughter. Our boys are grown and living in the states. So while she was raised for a while with the boys she has also spent a great deal of time living like an only child. I do feel somewhat like I have raised two families. One made up of boys and one made up of an only girl. It's funny, when we go to the states to see the boys she falls right into the youngest only girl spot. One minute loving her brothers and the next wanting to be the only child. The boys hold their ground and remind her that there are four children in the family. Boys come with zero drama. They state there case and move on. Girls, oh boy! Crying life ending one minute, koom ba ya the next. I love how my family played out. All boys, all girls, or mixed? I would have been happy either way. As it turned out I kind of got to do all three. So, so happy for you!ReplyCancel

My mother likes her big family but while growing up she didn't especially enjoy having 5 older brothers and a baby brother. So happy for your family 🙂 I am a proud mom of three boys – and before having kids never saw myself as a "boy" mom. Now they are 21, 19, and 14…and I have to admit to loving our identity as the "boy" family. My sons are very different, and I honestly never felt like I was missing out on anything. I also kind of like the role of "only girl."

I had a boy 22 years ago. I went through a messy divorce, and never thought I would have anymore children…well when I wasn't looking…boom I fell in love and found myself with a baby girl at 38. Then boom…another baby girl at 41. I am now 45 and loving the dynamic between my 7 year old and 4 year old girls. I secretly wish I had found this wonderful man sooner and I know I would have a whole bunch of kiddos running around. Having had both I can honestly say…I Love the girl power in our house!

I grew up the second of 6 kids—4 girls in 6 years, and then two boys a few years later. Growing up with three sisters was such a blessing in my life. We are all so close today. It's cliche, but I don't know what I would do without my sisters! Yes, it was a bit of a challenge when we had 4 teenage girls in the house (I honestly don't know how my poor father survived haha!) But I wouldn't trade my sisters for anything. When my husband and I found out were having our second little girl, I was so happy. I'm about to deliver my third girl any day now. We also have 6 and 3 year old girls. I love having all one sex. I was sure my first would be a boy, but surprise! Then I was thrilled to give her a sister. When I found out I was pregnant with #3 I was terrified to have a boy. I have so much experience with girls, we have all the clothes and toys, etc. Finding out it was a girl was a relief in many ways and my girlies are thrilled. I'm the 2nd of 6 girls, no boys. SUPER-Charged drama at my house but tons of fun with all the Barbies and girlie stuff. My poor dad! He was a sports nut and usually retreated to his room and turned on ESPN really loud to drown out the drama downstairs. 😉 Sadly there are a few of my sisters who aren't on speaking terms as adults, but one of my sisters is my very best friend in the whole world. I am thrilled for you! I hope it is a boy too. I had a scan whatsy and they said it was a boy. Next day flew to Europe and when I got home I got another scan- still a BOY. Anyway he's two now and I love that kid more than anything on the planet. I run a medical negligence litigation team and I see a lot of sad things so I was so frightened about the scans. I was almost 40, my partner was almost 50- the odds weren't great, but the bottom line is, when you're ready to parent, you're ready to parent. There are no guarantees, and you two are very brave and wonderful parents. Your girls are both so lucky to have you as parents. I am a chronic worrier too. Please never stop blogging.

Congratulations again! While I only have an almost three year old at home, I have found that I am definitely more pre-occupied this pregnancy and have guilty for not really focusing on the baby as much as I did with my first. But a quick reminder that life was totally different then, I am okay with where I am. I think finding out the gender (we go in a couple weeks too) will definitely make a difference. We are trying to hold out telling our son until we know the gender as well.
I am a worrier by nature, and ever since my son was born I have really focused on not worrying. I take solace that I am exactly where God wants me to be, and it's His plan, not mine. So when I start to worry about things I cannot control, I just remember to be present and feel the joy of this particular moment. And most of the time there is joy in every situation… eventually. I think that you are holding back on your feelings for your baby because of what you fear. The more the pregnancy goes on and the ultrasounds keep on coming in with good news, the more attached you will be. For the record, when we had our third I was worried as my husband didn't seem as connected or into it as with our first two – although I am not sure he realized it. Anyways – once baby was here it was clear I should not have worried! That baby is 5 now and they are very close. Life just is busy with two little ones! A family of three is lovely. I have a big request for you 🙂 I'm currently completing an early childhood degree at university and I need to find a picture of children on a roof. Your picture with the three children standing with their arms open wide would be unbelievably perfect (it's to go with a story of a play memory from our own childhood, and unfortunately I don't have a picture of my own roofing adventures – Mum was too busy telling us off lol). We haven’t road tripped a significant distance in quite a while. But one thing I can’t help doing anytime we road trip is snapping photos out the window–either as passenger or cautiously as the driver. I have to take pictures of the land. I love seeing the landscape, the slice of life in small towns...
I usually start out loving to take photos on roadtrips, stopping to get a soda and a "local" candy, stopping to pick flowers. Then, suddenly, it will be 9:00pm and we still have 4 hours of driving and I hate that I stopped and took photos or stopped in Cawker City to see the biggest ball of twine and I just want to BE THERE.
It always ends up being a love-hate (usually hate-love-hate in reality… And then those trips through Wyoming on I-80 are just hate-hate-hate). ReplyCancel
We moved to Dallas from a small town (about 2000 people) in Illinois when I was six. We took a roadtrip back up there twice every year–4th of July and Christmas–since we moved. I usually slept through a lot of Oklahoma, but I loved watching the differences in the landscape in the rocky hills in Missouri to the smooth farmland in central Illinois where we'd lived. I've only been up there a handful of times since we've been married. I get teary-eyed thinking of tassled cornfields and soybean fields that look like a velvety green carpet. I, too, have wondered about similar abandoned farmhouses along the road. I didn't live there very long, but I feel like it's part of my DNA. ReplyCancel
In my family's vacation home in Hawaii, we just had to replace our metal roof. It was not a fun project! We asked some of the local residents for a recommendation for roofing companies in Hawaii and found someone great but it still made the trip for less than pleasure. Totally worth it, though, because I love how it looks.

I´ve been reading and enjoying your blog for a good while now. I like to read about your girls and your life in the USA and Always find the Special Needs Spotlight really interesting. I´m a teacher and it´s good to be reminded now and then about how we all are different and have our own needs, regardless if we are "normal" or not.
Below is a link from Swedish television SVT (I´m Swedish). It´s a documentary about a 39 yr old man who was born without arms and legs. He lives a very good and interesting life and it is about possibilities, not restrictions.
I suppose you won´t be able to understand anything they say : ), which is a pity, but the pictures tell a great story none the less.

Read the comments too. Interesting, and sad how support and outlook changes everything. While I have never walked in your footsteps, or anyone with a special needs child, I have trouble believing that we all deserve an easy life – so what if it's hard. There is much joy and reward to be found in a hard life as well. Yeah I can hear everyone saying "how would you know" which is true, but I firmly believe God gives us what we can handle, and what we need tp grow on our journey. Every child, every person regardless of abilities has much to offer. I am extremely sad that abortion is seen as acceptable and often encouraged in many situations. It makes my heart so sad. Thank you for being the family that you are and sharing Lamp and all the families with us. God bless you.

I too agree that no one 'deserves' a life filled of ease and luxury. And while most of us will have some amount of grief and suffering, I think happiness is in our own hands and not just circumstantial (to a point). Yes some people have lives that seem very, very unfair and I certainly don't want to diminish that. I feel bad for those mothers who clearly didn't have the support and help they needed and I don't have an easy answer, but I think there are many, many people in the world who could claim to be in even worse circumstances. Either way, life is difficult. But it's also beautiful and everyone deserves a chance at life. ReplyCancel

Oh my! I haven't seen the Scottsbluff area since we moved from there when I was in 4th grade. The pictures made me tear up! I instantly felt the pulls of home. I love the gridded set up of the neighborhoods and the long straight sidewalks and streets that are so perfect for a walk or bike ride.
So funny–I've been in San Antonio since 1994. It feels like home because my home and family are here, even my parents who retired early and move here, but your pictures brought everything back.
