The Year My Son and I Were Born

I don’t remember when I first heard of this book, but I remember wanting to read it even then…before we found out about Lamp.  Then once we found out about Lamp, I had to read it.  This is the true memoir of a Mormon mother of 7 whose last child turns out to have down syndrome.  I first became familiar with the author Kathryn Lynard Soper through the blog Segullah, {the blog being one component of Segullah,  a larger literary organization for LDS women, which Soper founded}.  I was first drawn to Kathryn’s candid writing on the blog, particularly regarding her long time struggle with depression.  She is honest, real and incredibly talented.  So far the book has been amazing.  Although our situations are different, I’ve been surprised at just how much my feelings mirror hers.  It’s very accurate and brutally honest.  I’m still in the beginning of the book, but I’d recommend it for general reading and definitely to someone who is going through the shock and grief of finding out their child has disabilities.  It’s also great if you just want to understand what someone might be going through who is dealing with this type of situation.  Go here to start the first chapter {there’s a link from there to continue reading}.  

Also, I just wanted to put in a plug for us…. tomorrow we’re going in for a full day of testing and meetings with Doctor’s and genetic counselors.  It’s sure to be a long and emotional day…we’d appreciate any and all prayers.
