Hi! I thought it would be fun to start a new series where I share some of my favorite things I’ve been enjoying lately. Something to wear, something to read, something to watch, something to eat. Feel free to leave any of your favorites below and I’ll check them out!
wear: I’ve been on the hunt for a well worn pair Levi’s 501’s in thrift stores for a while to no avail. The search is over! Anthropologie is now stocking them. Classic, no frills, boyfriend style denim with a higher waist and button fly. They have a few different 501 styles right now, but these are the ones I have and love AND all denim is on sale right now! Run, don’t walk!
read: I read A Man Called Ove a few months ago and loved it. I’m a big believer that “truth is stranger than fiction” and typically turn to nonfiction for my reading pleasure. Additionally fiction can sometimes feel frivolous unless it’s very well done and I come away feeling like a better person for having read it. I feel like a better person for having read this book. Also, the movie was equally as charming and up for an Oscar last year for best foreign film and is free with your Amazon prime membership! But please read the book! As usual, it’s much better.
watch: Hunt for the Wilderpeople is one of the best movies I’ve watched in a long time. Hits the exact right note of quirky, hilarious and yet poignant. It didn’t look like a movie I would like, but I loved it. Don’t watch the trailer–those things just give too much away–just watch the movie and thank me later.
eat: I’ve been addicted to these Dark Chocolate Crack Cocaine Sea Salt Cashews from Ghirardelli. I don’t even usually like Ghirardelli chocolate OK? But these are a game changer. The only down side is that these bags say they’re about 3.5 portions in them, but I tend to inhale them as if they are single portion size. When I say addictive, I mean addictive. You’ve been warned.
Hi Miggy, I really love your blog and admire you for so many things you do. One thing you wrote today struck me as odd (although I can certainly see what you mean): reading fiction as frivolous. I have never thought of it like that, as I see literature as an art form – that might of course make you a better person, but it does not have to. It's just there. (But maybe I only don't think of reading fiction of frivolous because it's part of my job …)
Yeah, I should probably clarify that as I completely agree that writing is art and completely valid and wonderful and beautiful on its own. I was reflecting on a book I read lately that I felt was just a fun, escapism type of book that a) I didn't love that much to begin with and b) I could have skipped altogether and never felt like I was missing out. I guess that's why I said I want to feel like a better person for having taken the time to read fiction. Which of course is completely subjective as what one person wants out of their fiction (an escape, a mental break) is completely different than what someone else may want from theirs (a moral lesson, a broadened world view). In my defense I did say "fiction can SOMETIMES feel frivolous unless very well done." I certainly didn't mean to imply that on the whole fiction is frivolous, because I certainly don't feel that way! And of course what one person wants from their art (be it reading, music, visual art) will differ greatly from what another person wants.

Eeeekkkk, I wish you could of seen how happy I was to see what your movie choice is. Us kiwis are notoriously crazy-happy and prideful about anything showcasing lil ol' NZ. Because of course NZ is just amaze-balls.

Yes, I probably should have said this movie is from New Zealand and I absolutely hope to make it there one day! Everything I've ever heard, seen or read about NZ has been positive!
A local store very close by and the stockist of the best ever caramel slice, chocolate milkshakes and smoked brinza cheese has recently gone crazy busy because it's chocolate cake got a shout out, from some lady who said it was the best she had ever tried. Crazy. I go there a little too often but had to drive past as the line was out the door. All because of a review by an actress who was living here for a while filming. Her name just so happens to be Scarlett Johansson 🙂
Hi Miggy, Just wondering if you ever shop on Poshmark? I have bought 501s there a couple times now, and you can get some really good deals there. The second pair of high-waisted button fly ones I got were $30.

We just watched Hunt for the Wilderpeople the other day and I can't stop thinking about how much I loved it! Such a well done show. I keep meaning to recommend it to everyone I know, glad you have already done so!
