Quilt Update

Remember the bedroom makeover?  Yes, it’s still in the works.  The big hold up is the king-sized quilt I’m making for our bed.  I fell in love with this blanket and wanted it so badly as the coverlet for our new bed.  The problem is it only comes in a queen size.  Besides, it really doesn’t look that warm–I think there would be a lot of layering in the winter.  After going back and forth for a while, I decided to make my own version, which of course means a quilt.  I knew the biggest challenge would be completing the main pattern.  Well last week I finally finished it!  I’m hesitant to post pictures revealing too much before it’s actually finished, but I was just too excited not to post something.

If I didn’t make it obvious, the top picture is the blanket I fell in love with and the bottom picture is the main pattern of my quilt pieced together.  If you know anything about quilting you might understand what a beast this has been!  And I still have a ways to go.  I’ve never made a quilt larger than a toddler sized bed, so this has definitely been a challenge.  But I’m also really excited for how it’s looking so far and excited for it to get finished.  I kinda can’t believe I took on such a huge challenge when I have somewhat limited quilting experience, but to actually see this coming together is so gratifying.  Plus, I always think the best way to learn is by doing right?  For me, this really eclipses any other DIY I think I’ve featured on this blog.  It’s not quite as big and impressive as the bed, but almost.

In the meantime I’ve still been super excited for another baby girl and have been thinking of so many baby projects I’ve been wanting to tackle, but I’ve told myself no projects until the quilt is done.  That’s some motivation right there!

I have to admit I kinda get a rush out of doing something that feels almost too big, a what-am-I-thinking? and why-didn’t-I-just-take-an-easier-route? project.  This is the kind of project that could have totally collapsed or really come together… any one else relate to these kind of self inflicted challenges?  Perhaps it’s pushing yourself physically or in some other way instead?
