See that wood? My husband is making us a new bed.
Let me say that again…
My bad*#% HUSBAND is freaking MAKING us a new bed.
Not a headboard. A entire bed. He’s wanted to upgrade to a king for a while, so when he flipped through a rather nice furniture company’s catalog a while ago and saw this bed he said, That’s it. That’s our new bed. I’m going to make us that bed. At first I was a little like, Well hold on soldier, lets talk about this… So we did. We deliberated over some other options, but in the end we came back to his original idea. We’re both pretty excited. Honestly, I don’t even know how he knows how to do this stuff…he just does. If there’s one quality I find attractive in a man…it’s a man who knows how to make stuff. With his bare hands. And power tools. Hawt.
Aside from bragging about this bed, there are some logistical issues I need help with. Since our room is not exactly a king size room and our closet is teeny-tiny, we’re going to need to make some changes in our room. For years I’ve used ‘decorative’ baskets for laundry–can you think of any other solutions for hiding laundry in plain sight? Also, any good solutions for small bedside tables? (Can’t be wall mounted either). Help!
Can’t wait to show before and after pictures.
My friend once used two small chests that doubled as a bench/seat as a clothes hamper, which I thought was genius! Can't wait to see the finished bed!!
Jojo–Yes, this is the idea I like best. I'm still thinking it could be tough to find the right ones…I was even thinking to ottomans or one large ottoman at the end of the bed that opened for storage.
Thanks!
That's why I love my husband too…he can make anything. Kyle made our bed before we got married, and we had the same dilemma as you, where we needed storage. He made four wood drawers that slide under our bed that we can store stuff in. They are really basic, but you can't see them and they are awesome for storing clothes or whatever you choose.
I didn't know Kyle made your bed…now I want to see pictures. I love handy guys. 🙂
I agree with Chelsea… growing up I had a very small room, just barely enough room for a twin bed and a dresser. My dad is quite handy and he made all kinds of nifty storage areas for my room. Even though it was small, I loved it. One of the best things he did was make under the bed storage in the form of drawers. And it wasn't attached to the bed, so it's portable and currently under the bed in my spare bedroom! Not that you want to use that for laundry, but you could free up some space in your closet. I also have a wooden trash bin, which is great for trash, but it could also double as a hamper and can come in variety of colors (or your husband can make it!)! It has a lid, so laundry is hidden and it has a small footprint! Good luck, can't wait to see the finished product!
Yes I know under the bed is a good choice, but I'm sorta torn–ideally we wanted it rather modern and minimal looking–that means there is no bed skirt and thus nothing under the bed. BUT…we don't have a lot of storage in this place so I don't know how practical that is. We may just have to do it.
Not necessarily the best solution, but I have hooks on the wall by my washer & dryer, and each of us (even the littlest kid) has a robe there. People go to that spot & disrobe, put their dirty clothes into my laundry baskets (thus eliminating sorting 6 people's worth of laundry for me!) and put on a robe.
They have to walk back there to return the robe, after they put on their jammies (or whatever) in their rooms – but it works. We have occasional nakedness streaking through the house, but we are okay with that. :>
Could you build little bed side table INTO the bed frame? I saw that done once and I thought it was so cute and a great space saver. Just an idea.
I like the look of stools or chairs as bedside tables – it keeps things informal and fun. My bedside tables are built-in bookshelves under two windows that flank the beds… and I hate them. I wish I could have a separate table and change up the look, but the hubbers enjoys the no-work aspect of leaving them. 🙂
Yes, stools and chairs are cute…good thoughts. Thanks!
Dustin built our bed tall enough to fit a clothes hamper underneath it. We nixed the boxspring, making the bed a super normal height but still having awesome useable space underneath the bed. You know how pricey our bedroom's real estate is….
Yes, precious real estate. Like I said above, I'm torn about the under the bed storage…but we may just have to do it.
ps can't wait to see more pics of your place.
We have really cute plant stands as our bedside tables! One is three tiered for extra space for books/magazines, the other is just tall and…slender? For lack of a better description.
