Round Top Review

Round Top is big ya’ll.  OK?  We probably didn’t see a tenth of what was there.  It’s huge.  That’s point number one.  Point number two is that while I’m grateful I got to go at all since it was a little out of the way on our way home from Dallas (another trip to Oz) going to Round Top with 2 kids in tow for a few hours is not the ideal way to experience it.  To really experience Round Top you need to leave the kiddies at home, go with some girlfriends and stay for a couple days.

So who’s with me?  Round Top spring 2013?  Let’s do this.  I’m as serious as a heart attack.

I snapped a lot of iphone pics and here are my observations:

1)  If there’s some random vintage thing you want, you can find it at RT.  Even English style telephone booths–there were at least 8 of them.

2) I saw a lot of things that I rarely see at regular thrift/antique stores and if I did see them  I’d probably be super excited and want to buy it immediately.  But seeing these items en mass, for cheaper-than-usual prices made me think Oh, giant metal letters/enamel buckets/wooden crates/metal gym locker baskets/Jenny Lind Beds again?  These things are a dime a dozen… and I could comfortably walk away.  Weird.

3)  One thing that bugged me was the wide selection of faux-tiques.  Distressed Tolix knock-off’s anyone?  To be fair, I’m not above knock-off’s and in fact while I hate the fake distressing here, if you wanted some Tolix chairs for $79.00 (versus the regular $269 or $249 price tag) these would be a great buy along with a few cans of spray paint.  (Kathryn, I’m looking at you.)  But there were just a lot of tents filled with ‘fake antiques’ that were just too cheesy and contrived.  And don’t even get me started on the craft booths…no pictures.    I couldn’t stomach it.  (Just imagine hot pink, tiger striped crosses.)

4) And just some pics of stuff I liked…

In the end I didn’t get anything.  The only thing I’m sorta regretting is the above vintage baby block–easily my all time favorite vintage baby block.  Yes children, Z is for Zeppelin. Led Zeppelin.

In short it was amazing and overwhelming and a thrifters paradise.
I really want to go again.
Without my kids and for longer.
