A couple weeks ago I asked you guys for new music recommendations. As usual I picked a starting point and went from there…only I didn’t get very far. I decided to start with the Alabama Shakes and I have not moved on past this band. They are the real deal. And it seems like these kids are pretty new as their debut album came out last month. It’s bluesy rock with a good amount of soul. The vocals, that voice… Take a listen here:
I wrote my friend who suggested them and said something like Have mercy, these boys can play music! How wrong I was. These boys and this girl, can play music. I’m kind of embarrassed to admit I did not think that was a female singing, just a dude with a lot of depth and a great falsetto. Not since No Doubt have I been this excited about a female fronted band. You just don’t see it that often–all boys with one female who happens to be the lead singer and in this case plays the guitar as well. Other songs I recommend I Found You and Hang Loose. And if you want to see them in action check them out preforming on Conan here.
I’m still up for new music recommendations, so please keep them coming! To give you a better feel for what I listen to I love the following bands: Bon Iver, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes, Vampire Weekend, No Doubt, Led Zeppelin, Mates of State, The Cure, The Shirelles, Modest Mouse, Death Cab, etc, etc.
Your taste in music is quite close to mine so here are some other current favorites of mine.
Three Canadian bands:
Little Scream, Great Lake Swimmers, and Mark Berubé and the Patriotic few. Another one, yet more ethereal and atmospheric is Patrick Watson.
And a brit band quite more folksy and banjo-y: Mumford and Sons.
Enjoy!
Mona.
Young the Giant.
If you get a chance.
Do you like M83? I think their latest album is pretty great. Here's a taste: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dX3k_QDnzHE
yay!
also, it seems like every time my girl and I are driving somewhere together, The Cure comes on the radio and I TURN UP THE RADIO SO LOUD and she plugs her ears. KIDS THESE DAYS!
I second Mumford and Sons. Thanks for mentioning Alabama Shakes–I love them! Have you heard Emily Hope Price's band "Pearl and the Beard"? Their song, "Prodigal Daughter" is wonderful (watch the video).
We love Blind Pilot. And always come back to Josh Ritter.
Hey Miggy
You might enjoy Clock Opera. At the moment they have only released their debut in the UK but you can find most of their stuff on youtube or buy on 7digital.com. They have some gorgeous videos too.
I've really enjoyed reading your blog, and the perspectives you open up. Thanks.
