We’ve lived here for 7 months now. And until 2 days ago we had an Ikea curtain hanging sideways by a nail and hook to provide a little privacy and shield from the sun in our big family room. Like this:
Yep 7 months. This window is particularly tricky because of how wide it is. 2 regular curtain panels is too short, and 4 too many and 3…well who wants a 2 and 1 panel split?
Then I had the genius idea of ordering shower curtains instead! So I found these shower curtains from Urban Outfitters and after a little reworking I put them up.
Unfortunately it still wasn’t right. First, they were a little too short so I had to hang them sideways which meant the stripes didn’t line up and I didn’t like the cheap hanging hooks. Most importantly I feel like everything we have in this room is either grey and white, or geometric. So I wanted something softer and a little pop of color.
So last night I did this…ta-da!
I found and liked these soft watercolor, floral panels also from Urban Outfitters. However, they were way, way too sheer. And again I really only needed 3. With those 2 problems I was a little on the fence, but last night I committed. I cut one panel in half and sewed each half to the other panel. Then I lined each curtain with a white fabric. The husband isn’t so sure. His exact words were, I hate them…but as long as you’re happy. To be honest I wasn’t so sure either. When closed against a dark night window it’s a giant, floral wall. But now that I see them in the day, with light streaming through and I think they really bring the room together nicely. It’s just the colorful, soft touch I was going for.
Why yes I was watching Gilmore Girls when I snapped these pictures.
Do you want to see the rest of the room? OK. This is our large family room (or as PSP says, friendship room). The other side of the shelves is our office and studio space. I’ll show that part another day when it’s a little more put together.
I promise I’ll show more pics of the house soon. After 7 months the thing I still love most about San Antonio is our house. Personally, I think that’s a good thing.
Awesome room!
We've been in this house for almost a year (on April 1st) and we too have a big ol front window like yours. That has no curtains. Or blinds. Or shades. You've inspired me to finally, FINALLY do something about it!
My opinion? I LOVE them. I never would have thought of that solution, but it is gorgeous and really pulls the room together nicely.
I am seriously going to hire you to do our home (if/when) we ever leave our one-bedroom apt. 🙂
P.S. saw your painting hanging in the Smoots home, and it is STUNNING in real life. We were talking about you last night, and what a talented person you are.
Way better then then the grey! and the first one of course. Really brings out other colors in the room.
Very nice! Way to go problem solving!
Very nice! Way to go problem solving! What a nice big room, too. Friendship room is such a sweet thing to call it, Miss PS!

Oops. Didn't realize my comment printed twice. Sorry.
Hahaha I am totally watching the Gilmore girls because of you. I am in the 5th season right now. I can only get 3 discs at a time from the library so we are going there way more often now. I feel this is benefitting everyone.
I love em! I think the floral compliments your other accents very nicely. I thought I recognized a little Rory and Laurelie action :). Love it.That room is awesome. The space is so great for kids huh?
good job going softer… Its is so hard to find the perfect fabric for a curtain. I bought some at IKEA that were too sheer in the daylight and the pattern became too muted, but I liked them at night. You can never win!
Love your house. Love. Love.
love it. love gilmore girls. love you.
You have the alternative to utilize a wide assortment of textures like silk sari, fabric, polyester or with/without covering.bamboo curtain
