Howdy.
The updates come slowly when you’re pilfering internet access from your neighbors, your house is in shambles and your husband had to report to work the day after we got here. Seriously? So here’s the quick rundown…
–The rest of the road trip was fun. The girls did pretty well all things considered and fortunately the DVD player held out. Now that I’m a Southern woman let me just say, thank you Jesus!
–Galveston beaches are awesome. I don’t know why California gets all the credit when it comes to beaches in the US. The sand was finer than powdered sugar and the water was refreshing yet warm. While the beach was great, forgetting to apply sunscreen to my back was not great. Live and learn.
–The lamest part of the move was that the movers left a third of our stuff in Ohio. When we called to inquire about when we’d be receiving our second shipment they were like…what stuff? (radio silence) Oh….shoot… It’s made the unpacking a little slow. What can you do? Well, besides call your coordinator demand to speak to speak to her manager resulting in an overnight compensation check and a rush delivery of your stuff? Besides that, what can you do? (If that sounds harsh, trust me it’s not…but it’s a long story).
–And finally, the house. We’re here! Our little oasis in the San Antonio desert. I’m not superstitious, but I am a little stitious* and there was a part of me that was worried that somehow the deal would fall through, or that the house burn down or that something would go wrong. But here we are in the little house I imagined my family in since last January. It feels great. Don’t get me wrong I still miss Chateau Cincinatti and all our friends, but we’re here and despite our first unwelcome house guest, an impressively large cockroach, we’re loving it. After a week of hotels, I even think Lamp has started to realize this is our new home. I hate living in boxes and I’m excited to get some pictures of the new place asap, but it’s just going to have to wait until we get really settled. I know what you’re thinking…you can’t wait. Well, I’m sorry. You have to.
Well we should finally have some legal internet access by tomorrow evening and I’ll try to get back to regular blogging soon.
Signing off, from San Antonio. Yee-haw!
I feel like I need to get into the Texas spirit…do you have a favorite movie that takes place in Texas? So far I’ve thought of Giant, Dazed and Confused and Happy Texas…anything else?
*If you can tell me where that quote is from you win my utmost respect and approval.
Well, there's this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJEwrw4VEls
Giant… A cult classic in our house!
"My well came in Bic, it came in big!… I'm a rich one, I'm a rich boy now!".
"We had a little piece o' luck… About a million… A million dollars? A million a year?…no, a million dollars a munth!"
Doesn't get any better…. Liz Taylor, Rock Hudson, James Den… Love it!
Hook em Horns,
G.G.
Whip It! Love that movie. So happy you made it. Oh, I love Texas. I hope you fall in love fast. Besides the bugs and heat, it's a haphaphappy place.
It's killing me that I don't know the stitous. It's on the tip of my tongue. Ahhh! Tell me! 🙂
Hi there. First comment from me- couple things. I'm from Ohio!!! Hooray! I'm also moving to Texas! Albeit, Dallas for me. Now to the point- as a fan of The Office I had to comment because I knew where the quote was from! 🙂 Best wishes-
Shana
Have you ever watched the series Friday Night Lights? I don't like football AT ALL, but that is a great show and very Texas! Seasons 1-4 are available to stream instantly on Netflix if you have it…
I am in the exact same position. We even had drama with our move. Except we're now in NJ, not TX 🙂
Good luck unpacking! I'm right there with you!
Michael Scott, the Office. The best.
I see someone already beat me to mentioning Friday Night Lights, one of my FAV shows of all time. Texas forever!!
Yep, Michael Scott. Joy made a plaque for my little brother in his room with that quote. Glad you all made it there safely, hope the rest of your stuff comes soon!
Laurie–Yes! Classic…there's no basement in the Alamo!
GG–yes, I definitely think of Dana when I think of that movie.
Abbie–I LOVE Whip It! Just saw it a couple months ago and it definitely made me excited to the lone star state.
Shana, Natalie, Britty–I'm so glad other people remember that little gem as well as I do.
Ames and Christina–OK yes…I've heard that's a great show. Sounds like we need to stream Netflix.
Jazzy–Ugh, moving. I love it/hate it. Good luck!
Texas Forever, you HAVE to watch Friday Night Lights.
Not only is it an amazing show, but it filmed all around Austin in real locations, so you might start to recognize areas.
Oh, just now seeing this post, and Laurie totally beat me to the Pee Wee's Big Adventure Texas reference. I cannot help myself. I love that movie in all its silly comedic greatness.
Argh on the leaving of some of your belongings in Ohio. Sorry about that!
Ah luv athinkin' o' y'all bein' a might bit closer to me here in the Foat Wuth area. Some day when the wind is a blowin' in yore direction, Ah'm agunna holler out "Howdy, Miggy!" with all the gumption Ah can muster, and Ah'm acountin' on y'all ahearin' me all the way from these here parts! A big Texas howdy-do welcome to youuuuuuu! : D
Here are some more movies that were filmed in Texas. I've seen all of them except the last one listed and thought they were good.
Tender Mercies (Robert Duvall)
Tin Cup (Kevin Coster, Cheech Marin)
Places in the Heart (set in 1930s, tear-jerker, Sally Field)
Lone Star (M. McConaughey,Chris Cooper)
Barbarosa (has Willy Nelson in it)
Fandango (early Kevin Costner)
Last Picture Show
Welcome to San Antonio! I've been here 4 years and like it alot!
Office Space was filmed in parts of Dallas and they make reference to a few places in the D/FW area… Not exactly a "Texas" movie, but it's hilarious all the same!
i was also going to recommend friday night lights. i like the earlier seasons more than the later ones…but it is all about texas and pretty great.
Welcome to Texas!
The Office! One of my favorite quotes.
For some reason, despite all the cool things filmed in Texas I can only think of Pee Wee Herman's Big Adventure. Especially that song in it… "The stars at night, are big and bright…." you finish it. : )
Amen to Friday Night Lights. It will get you in the mood to live there for sure.
I love all the comments on Friday Night Lights. It is such a good representation of Texas football. The movie Friday Night Lights is also fantastic and is based on a true story. Welcome to Texas! I hope you love it here!
Welcome to Texas, neighbor! I'll be in SA Thursday picking up my little Sack 'o Sugar and his momma. She has had trouble with every military move they've had (4). It ain't a move without a story! Favorite Texas movie, besides Giant, is Hope Floats. Love me some Sandra Bullock (now also your Texas neighbor just a few miles up the road).
I love Austin (my inlaws live in Austin and SIL teaches at UT, so we are thereby UT fans when we are in TX, otherwise I am a CAL Bear or WSU Cougar or UW Husky.) I also love San Antonio and visit there 1x a year during SXSW, in March, where my sons band from NYC always performs, and they also do a show in San Antonio.
Enjoy Texas–the food is AMAZING!!!
Care taking daughter…I have to know what's the name of your sons band? And any food recommendations are welcome!
For great pizza, try Dough. It's not too far from you, on
Blanco. It's just before you get to the mall on 410. The wait can be long so go at an off time or carry out. Yum.
"No Country for Old Men"
"The Alamo"
"All the Pretty Horses"
"Terms of Endearment"
"From Dusk Til Dawn" (I know, this has violence and strong language:)
(my mom keeps calling out movies that are also about Mexico, but have some crossover into Texas, like "Like Water for Chocolate":)
and I also love "Giant":) If I think of any more, I will let you know! Love you and your fam! Good luck with the micotsunami!:)
