A Brother Like That

my big bro and I
It’s no big deal, so don’t get your hopes up.”  My brother tells me about a week ago.  “But I sent you something in the mail and I want you to call me before you open it.”  Hmmm.  Very cryptic….and mysterious.  Two things my brother is not.  Which is why I should have known… But I didn’t think about it too much.  So when the mystery package arrived yesterday I did as I was told and promptly called my brother.  OK.  I’ve got the package.  I’m assuming you just wanted to say goodbye before I open the apparent mail bomb you sent, I said.  So thanks, you’ve been a good brother.  Har har…
So I open it.  Not a big deal my bum.  Inside was a brand-spankin’ new ipad.  Yes.  An IPAD.  He shrugs it off and tells me he got it through work and since they already had one he figured I might like it.  The reason he wanted me to call him was so I woldn’t open the actual ipad and therefore I could take it to an apple store and trade it in for a bigger model….which I couldn’t do if I had torn into it like a kid on Christmas morning (which I totally would have done).
I remember a story from church or someplace years ago about a kid who rides in a shiny, new fancy car.  When he asks the driver where he got the car the driver tells him his brother gave it to him.  Then the kid starts to say “I wish…”  And the drive thinks the kid is going to say, “I wish I had a brother like that.”  Instead the kid surprises the guy and says, “I wish I could be a brother like that.”  My brother is one of the most generous people I know.  I don’t think I’m nearly as giving and unselfish.  I don’t know if my brother remembers that cheesy story, but he’s a brother like that.  (Of course this is the same brother that filled the bathtub with water and threw me in fully clothed minutes before being picked up for a sleepover in middle school.  So he was also a brother like that…)
