Nature Walks

Beanie and I found this leaf on one of our nature walks last week. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a leaf change colors quite like this. Beautiful.

We’ve also been collecting acorns. {I don’t think I had ever seen an actual acorn until living in the east. I’m still sort of captivated by them….real life acorns!} I filled a glass vase with them for a little fall decoration. Then I saw the maggots and mold. Yuck. So after a little google search I discovered that you need to dry acorns out before using them as decor. This will keep them from growing mold and will kill any little bugs living inside. Just place them on a cookie sheet lined in foil, and bake for several hours on a low heat–nothing above 175 degrees. Also if you notice any small holes in the acorns that’s a sure sign of bug activity….so you might want to throw those out. Once they’re cooked they’re good to go!
