Beanie and I found this leaf on one of our nature walks last week. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a leaf change colors quite like this. Beautiful.
We’ve also been collecting acorns. {I don’t think I had ever seen an actual acorn until living in the east. I’m still sort of captivated by them….real life acorns!} I filled a glass vase with them for a little fall decoration. Then I saw the maggots and mold. Yuck. So after a little google search I discovered that you need to dry acorns out before using them as decor. This will keep them from growing mold and will kill any little bugs living inside. Just place them on a cookie sheet lined in foil, and bake for several hours on a low heat–nothing above 175 degrees. Also if you notice any small holes in the acorns that’s a sure sign of bug activity….so you might want to throw those out. Once they’re cooked they’re good to go!
You should ask your mother in law what her elementary's mascot was… they were the Oakridge Acorns. That is right… Acorns. They later decided what a stupid idea that really was and went with something much cooler… Olympians. Yes… I was an Oakridge Olympian. Awesome.
HA! that is funny…i thought the SAME thing about acorns…i was so excited to find real acorns here in NY! you sure don't see them in Vegas!
thanks for the tip on drying them out!
That leaf is so gorgeous! I'm glad you spotted it and saved it. I'm with you on the acorn thing- I still think it's so cool to see them in real life. Before I thought they were just in kids books and stuff like that.
I am so jealous of all the midwesterny and east coastery (like those words?) things you've gotten to do over the years. I am so enchanted by the fall and winter over there.
I hope you like the hair creme. It's definitely a finishing product, not really a styling product, and it's pretty lightweight. I hope you like it – be sure to let me know!
I never tire of finding the "hatless acorns" on the ground and finding them a little hat that fits. Don't ask why this is so fun for me. nerd alert.
i seriously do this. at the park. while my kids are playing. ha ha….
I grew up in Colorado and we had two oak trees in our backyard. We had endless fun playing with the acorns, and lots of squirrels who loved them!
Heather-that's funny. I don't know why, but I don't ever recall seeing an acorn in Utah. Or Colorado for that matter Holly. Strange.
Kado and Erin–exactly–they were out of children's stories or something.
Likely–yeah I glued almost all those 'hats' on.
oh I love the acorn idea! so cute! And I'm sure, unless I read your blog, I would have had mold and bugs too!!
