I kinda wanted to wait to show the quilt until it was all done, but once again I’d like the opinions of my hip readership.
Here is the top of the quilt:
Patchwork-y. Vintage fabrics with solids and one contemporary print. I dig it. I just don’t want it to look country bumpkin-ish. So for the back I wanted something a little more contemporary and not too matchy-matchy. I think this backing achieved those goals, but I’m not sure they go well together… I may have missed the mark.
Here it is:
In the spirit of ‘opinions were like kittens I was giving them away’* please tell me what you really think. Be honest. But kind. But not kind of honest… really honest. Thanks.
*If you can tell me where that lyric comes from you get some serious props.
No way. I think you are right on the mark with that! I love that it sort of reminds me of your BFA. That quilt is so fabulous. I would totally pay big money for that (if I had big money of course). I love the fine artist in you coming out through your sewing. It totally shows. Great job!
I love it. I much prefer the contemporary quilt look to the country quilt look. The back is awesome too. Way to showcase your talents yet again!
Honestly, it seems like two different quilts in one, which is pretty cool. I like that one side is different from the other. Does it bother you that they're so different, but on the same quilt?
I love that the sides are so different. I don't love the coral/salmon fabric but I have an aversion to that color so it's probably just me 🙂
Terese–You just made my day. I'm glad you can see the fine arts side of me in my quilting…that's sorta what I was going for and have been wanting to do, but have felt a little like I'm still holding back…maybe this will be a turning point.
MS–thanks!
Mojo–See–that's sorta what I'm afraid of…I mean in one sense I like the drastic turn, but in another sense I don't want them to be too different that you think it was a mistake or just idiotic.
Aubrey–haha–that's funny, I actually love coral/salmon…not sure why.
OK–thanks for the feed back, keep it coming.
modest mouse.
I love the bipolar quilt. Flip it for whatever mood you are in. I love both styles.
Very cute. I really love it!!
Likely–High fives. Of course you knew that song.
And good point on the different styles.
Erin–thanks for the input.
i love it. if you're worried about the cohesiveness. you could make one of the center stripes white… (but I don't really know what i'm talking about here…)…
I love the contemporary back paired w/ the pieced front. Reminds me a bit of Denyse Schmidt's style (just had my mom make two quilts for the kiddos based off her patterns). What color is the border going to be? White would make the back pop and let the front stand on its own but I'm sure anything would compliment it well. The only suggestion I have for the back is shifting the thin stripes a few inches to one side or another so they're not centered. I prefer the asymmetrical look but that's just me. I love that your stripes on the front aren't all lined up the same. It's refreshing.
I love the modern blocks of color, and even the front of the quilt has quite a refreshing edge to it. i think my only concern would be that the front seems to have all cool tones, and the back is much warmer. I think I'd keep them in the same temperature range.
I like it. But that is why I quilt, too. To make art – not bad country bumpkin blankets. And you will see a lot of those in Ohio.
I think as long as you can tell that it doesn't look idiotic than it's fine. Really, you and your family are looking at it the most and it's what you like that makes it matter.
Love. It.
Jealous.
